Today I took the train toward Villach but got off at Faak am See because
Stefan (distant relative) and Katerina (girlfriend) were vacationing there.
The conductor inquired because my ticket was for Villach, but I was able to
reassure him I was getting off early deliberately. That sort of unexpected
interaction would have been harder for me to handle in Germany previously.
After a brief visit in Faak am See, we drove to lunch and then to my hotel
in Villach. Then I followed a Villach walking tour I had downloaded.
I had my longest conversation yet at hotel check-in, about being early but
leaving my luggage, but the room was actually ready anyway, and so on. The
hotel both had old-style carbonless copy
paper and a new electronic key in small rod that you touched to a reader.
At the city musuem, I asked for a ticket, discussed payment, and so on, but
reached a point where I did not understand something and had to ask for English,
and the woman said “Englisch?” like she was a bit surprised. So I guess I am
fooling people some of the time.
The church in the center of town has a tower to go up and see around the town.
